Nationwide Equine Insurance Coverage

Excalibur Insurance Agency offers a wide variety of equine insurance policies for owners of horses. From comprehensive horse insurance to supplemental policies including farm insurance and equine liability, our plans are designed to meet your specific needs. Please review the descriptions of our policies below, and contact us with any additional questions.
Horse Insurance
Also known as equine insurance, general or full mortality insurance, this is a life insurance policy for your horse. This is perhaps the most important thing you can do to safeguard your investment in your horse. Animals are covered for death or humane destruction due to an accident, illness, disease or injury. Theft is also included. Certain exclusions do apply. Coverage is provided anywhere in the continental United States and Canada. Air transit coverage can be extended worldwide. Contact us in Hartland, Wisconsin, to inquire about our many equine insurance coverage plans or horse-related insurance options.
Animals from 24 hours old up to the age of 20 years old are eligible.  They must be healthy and sound and capable of performing their intended use. To insure your animal, an application, a current veterinary certificate or health statement signed by the applicant, along with substantiation of value are required. The equine insurance premium rate varies based on an animal’s use, breed, and age. A minimum premium may apply. We also sell livestock insurance for show cattle and breeding stock.
You may choose to purchase additional protection on your horse such as Veterinary Services or Major Medical, Surgical, Loss of Use, Agreed Value/Guaranteed Renewal or Stallion Infertility. These are endorsements that may be added to your mortality policy. You must have a full or general mortality policy in order to purchase these optional endorsements.
  • Veterinary Services – Also known as Major Medical Insurance or Veterinarian Reimbursement. It includes Surgical coverage. It will reimburse you for reasonable and customary fees for injury, illness or disease for covered medical or surgical procedures. Certain restrictions apply.  Horses between 90 days and 15 years of age are eligible. Limits available are $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000. There is a deductible. Treatment must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. A minimum mortality value may be required. Limits available vary by company.

  • Surgical – This coverage will reimburse you for reasonable and customary fees for surgical procedures necessary to save your horse’s life. Limits available are $2,500, $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000. Limits available vary by company.  A deductible applies. A minimum mortality value may be required.

  • Agreed Value/Guaranteed Renewal – Changes policy wording from fair market value to agreed value. With this endorsement, your mortality coverage will be renewed next year without exclusion. Since no exclusions apply, a vet exam is not needed for renewal no matter what your horse’s health status or value is. This coverage only applies to your mortality coverage.  Not available with all companies.

  • Loss Of Use #1 – This equine insurance coverage reimburses you 50% of your horse’s value in the event your horse becomes permanently unable to perform its specified use due to an injury by sudden external or accidental means. Most show or competition horses are eligible and must be insured for $10,000 or more. You would be able to keep your horse.  This option varies depending on the company.

  • Loss Of Use #2 – This coverage is more comprehensive than LOU #1.  It reimburses you 50% of your horse’s insured value in the event your horse becomes permanently unable to perform its intended use because of illness, injury, or disease. Your horse must be a show or competition horse with a value of $10,000 or more. Clean x-rays are required of all 4 feet and legs. If you have a claim, you will be able to keep your horse. This option varies depending on the company.

  • Stallion Infertility – If your stallion becomes totally and permanently infertile or impotent due to injury, illness, or disease, this coverage reimburses you the fair market value of your horse. The Company has the right to take possession of the horse.

Horse Farm Insurance
If you are a stable owner, this policy will provide coverage for your residence and its contents, barns, other outbuildings, and farm personal property. Liability coverage is included for your premises and equine operations, no matter how big or small. Various deductible and liability limits are available. This stable insurance policy is tailored to your specific requirements. Certain exclusions apply.

Equine Liability
This policy is designed to cover your personal or horse liability exposure for losses typically found in most horse operations. If you own horses, instruct, train, board, breed, show, or give clinics, we can tailor a policy to your exact needs. Limits of $300,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 are available. As with any insurance policy, certain exclusions apply.

Care, Custody, or Control
This coverage is legal liability insurance for non-owned horses in your care, custody, or control. If you have boarded horses or horses in training, this policy will cover you for death or injury to those horses. Limits from $2,500 to $200,000 per horse are available.
