No matter the value of the horse, it is imperative and highly recommended that you have a licensed veterinarian perform a prepurchase exam before buying a horse. To purchase insurance for your horse, a vet exam would be required if:
The value is over $100,000 - varies per company
The horse is less than 90 days old
The horse is older than 18 years old
If the horse has had previous health issues - discuss with the agent
If it is a race horse
If a vet exam is not performed or required, you may use the Health Statement. Please remember that sending an application to the agency does not constitute binding coverage. Your coverage is only bound when the agent has confirmed receipt of your correctly completed paperwork and has advised you as such. If you are not paying in full, a payment program may be available.
